The term dry cleaning is a bit of a misnomer. Learn what is involved in dry cleaning clothes and tips to get the best results from a dry cleaner.
Dry cleaning uses chemical solvents instead of water to clean clothes and fabrics, making it ideal for items that could be damaged by a standard washing machine. This process involves treating your garments to maintain their quality and prolong their lifespan.Dry cleaning launders clothes and fabrics using a chemical solvent containing little or no water. Dry cleaning still uses liquid in its solvents, it just does not use water that you use in your traditional at-home wash cycles. It's more expensive than home cleaning. Solvents can be toxic. Dry cleaning has existed since Roman times when ammonia was used to clean woolen togas to prevent shrinkage.By the 1930s, cleaners began using perchloroethylene, commonly called "perc." Perc has a distinctive chemical odor and is classified as carcinogenic to humans. In the 1990s, the United States Environmental Protection Agency began regulating dry cleaning chemicals and encouraging commercial cleaners to use safer solvents.

It's a nasty chemical, dangerous to spill, bad to breathe and really bad to drink. But it's really not very different from gasoline, you use special "soap" and the same machine recovers most of the liquid. You can use a 200 liter barrel for more than 100k pieces of clothes with the really efficient new machines. The soap and gunk is filtered through some big activated charcoal filters ... I thought cleaning gasoline was mostly heptane as opposed to fuel gasoline which is mostly octane.Hell I even knew a guy that washed all the mechanics shops of the area clothes and used diesel in just one of the machines and later he passed them through a regular dryclean to get rid of the smell. The clothes were honestly clean each time, but I was always afraid one day he would blow up the entire place.Downside, many dry cleaning solvents are either really nasty for human health, or they have environmental impacts such as contributing to smog and getting into groundwater chemicals like PERC can persist and get into drinking water.Drycleaning solvents are non-polar, and therefore do not interact with spots/stains/fibers the same as water. This is true ... Items are not "removed and remaining solvent is allowed to evaporate" . Solvents are not inexpensive, and great effort is used to reclaim almost all of it before a cleaning cycle ends.

Dry cleaning is any cleaning process for clothing and textiles using a solvent other than water. Clothes are instead soaked in a water-free liquid solvent (usually non-polar, as opposed to water which is a polar solvent). Perchloroethylene (known as "perc" for short) is the most commonly used ...
Most natural fibers can be washed in water but some synthetics (e.g., viscose) react poorly with water and should be dry cleaned if possible. If not, this could result in changes in texture, colour, strength, and shape. After World War I, dry cleaners began using chlorinated solvents. These solvents were much less flammable than petroleum solvents and had improved cleaning power. Early solvents were carbon tetrachloride and trichloroethylene (TCE). Carbon tetrachloride was first used as a stain remover in the early 1890s in Germany. From the customer's perspective, dry cleaning businesses are either "plants" or "drop shops". The former does on-site cleaning, while a drop shop receives garments from customers, sends them to a large plant, and then has the cleaned garments returned to the shop for pickup by the customer. The latter setup minimized the risk of fire or dangerous fumes created by the cleaning process. At the time, dry cleaning had been accomplished by using two machines—one for the cleaning process and the second to remove the solvent from the garments.
While detergent alternatives can be appropriate for many garments, many aren't suitable for delicate fabric. "Never use baking soda, vinegar, borax, or washing soda on wool, silk, or anything dry-clean only," says Fore explains.
"Such fabrics are too sensitive to a change in pH, and even a small amount of the wrong product can lead to fading, changes in texture, or even permanently damage the fabric." In these cases, you’re better off waiting until you can get to the store to pick up proper detergent or sending the items to the dry cleaner. No detergent? No problem. The two solvents, known as Perc and TCE, cause kidney cancer and other ailments, and have been the subject of years of controversy.
For decades, communities close to factories, airports, dry cleaners and other sites have lived with the consequences of exposure to trichloroethylene, or TCE, a toxic chemical used in cleaners, spot removers, lubricants and glue.Robles, who campaigns for cleaner water and air. Still, “I’ll never get my daughter back,” she said. Industry groups have criticized the new restrictions. The American Chemistry Council said in a statement that “the rule as proposed would present multiple challenges that could have far-reaching impacts on various industries and the national economy.” · The Dry Cleaning and Laundry Institute and the National Cleaners Association said in comments submitted to the E.P.A.Dr. Freedhoff, the E.P.A. assistant administrator, said in an interview that safer alternatives were becoming readily available. “There’s simply no reason to continue to use this stuff to make glue, or as a dry cleaning aid, or to clean up grease,” she said. The E.P.A. also banned all consumer uses of perchloroethylene, used in dry-cleaning and in automotive-care products.

Almost everyone has had their clothes dry cleaned at some point, but we may not have given the technique or chemicals used in the procedure much thought. For garments and materials that cannot be washed or dried in a standard washer or dryer, dry cleaning solvents are the most commonly utilized cleaning agents in the dry cleaning process. These dry cleaning solvents can be found in concentrations up to 100% and vary in color from clear to yellowish-green. White spirit, mineral spirits, Stoddard solvent, petroleum naphtha, and coal naphtha are names for this substance.Glycol ethers are a group of solvents that have a low evaporation point and can be used in dry cleaning fluid. They are colorless, have a faint odor, and are non-flammable. Dry cleaners will apply dry cleaning solvents to a stain and rub over the fibers until most of the dry cleaning solvent has been removed from the garment. The dry cleaner may also repeat this process until no more color is transferred to the cloth. Also known as perchloroethylene (Perc), it is clear in color with a sweet scent that can range from faint to strong depending on how it is diluted for dry cleaning purposes.
The Dyson Clean+Wash Hygiene wet floor cleaner was recently unveiled. Following on from the brand’s WashG1, the model does away with supposedly unhygienic filters with a new waste storage system. It can vacuum and mop simultaneously, and the accompanying dock offers a self-cleaning feature.
Dyson has announced the Clean+Wash Hygiene, a wet floor cleaner. This model was shown at the Dyson Unveiled event, which took place just before IFA 2025. The new device is a follow-up to the WashG1, the brand’s first wet dry vacuum, which launched in 2024.The Dyson Clean+Wash Hygiene is described as a wet and dry cleaner with “no unhygienic filter”. Designed to collect dry debris while also mopping up spilt liquid simultaneously, the device is equipped with an “ultra-absorbent” microfiber roller, with 84,000 microfibers per cm². The roller is said to have hook-like nylon bristles, which can pick up dirt and dust.According to Dyson, a notable difference between the Clean+Wash Hygiene and other wet dry vacuums is its waste system. This floor cleaner stores all waste in the head, automatically separating it into wet and dry water. Traditionally, these devices have a dirty water tank in the body.Another function of the Clean+Wash Hygiene is self-cleaning at the dock. The roller is washed at the docking station, then dried with 185°F (~85°C) hot air to remove odors and bacteria. Dyson describes the product as having a low-profile, lightweight body, weighing 3.8 kg (~8.4 lbs).
The EPA has banned two chemicals — known as TCE and perc — commonly found in dry cleaning solutions and stain removers.
TCE is a solvent used in degreasing products, stain removers, paint strippers, cleaning wipes, carpet cleaners and spray adhesives, and it evaporates quickly to become an air pollutant. It was once the more common solvent used in dry cleaning, Dr.Mainly found in dry-cleaning solvents, perc, or PCE, is released into the environment by industrial processes, including dry cleaning. Some of it evaporates in the air, while some sinks into the soil, where it can contaminate the water supply. The chemical is irritating to the eyes and upper respiratory tract — including the throat, sinuses, nose and mouth — when someone is directly exposed, according to the CDC.Companies using perc in consumer products, such as stain removers, or in industrial processes have under three years to do away with the chemical, the Washington Post reports. Dry cleaners will have 10 years to stop using perc, but in just six months, it will be prohibited in newly purchased dry-cleaning machines.TCE will have to be removed from all products within a year, although companies using it to clean parts for aircraft and medical devices and in manufacturing electric vehicle batteries and refrigerant, as well as in other transportation, security and defense systems, will have longer to make that transition. In the meantime, you can check product ingredient labels for TCE or perc (make sure to check for the full chemical names too). Generally speaking, “green” dry cleaners don’t use perc or TCE and are a safer option.
A trip to the dry cleaner can be time-consuming and costly. There's dropping off the clothes, paying their cleaning fee, and returning days later to pick up them up. This isn't a big deal if you’re dry cleaning one dress for a special event that's weeks away.
But for times when you need that dress — and a lot of other clothes — returned quickly, the dry cleaner isn't a great option. That's why learning to dry clean your own clothes is a good idea. In the long run, it will save you a lot of time, money, and stress.Dry cleaning is a process that uses a liquid solvent to clean clothes instead of laundry detergent and water. The solvent contains little or no water — which is why it's called “dry” cleaning. Professional dry cleaners use computerized machines to distribute the solvent on clothing throughout the cycle. While clothes do get wet in the process, the solvent evaporates much faster than water. The experts at Dry Cleaning Institute of Australia note that dry cleaning has two key benefits: it protects clothes' color and softness, and it extends the life of your garments (because it's gentler on fabrics than harsh detergents). This is an indication that your clothing’s fabric may react poorly to water and could shrink in a normal cycle. Here’s a list of fabrics that usually require dry cleaning, according Kelly’s Dry Cleaner’s: ... If your clothing care label simply says "dry clean," that means it's a recommended method — but not the only way to clean the item.

CHICAGO — Choosing the right tool for your operation’s long-term success
In Part 1 of this series, we examined how some cleaners have discovered what AI can do for them in their everyday tasks, and in Part 2, we explored some of the surprising ways this technology can be put to use across their operations. Today, we’ll conclude by looking at some of the AI platforms available to dry cleaners, as well as how to get started and what may come.Rachelle Balanzat, CEO of Juliette, an upscale drycleaning service in New York City, suggests identifying a single problem area. “Start with one issue,” she says. “Is it missed pickups? Customer follow-up? Inconsistent marketing? There’s likely a tool — and a playbook — for that.” · The approach of Robert Strong, president of California’s Country Club Cleaners, is similarly focused: “Find out what the customer’s pain point is, and then analyze to see, if I offered that service, how would it affect my company?”For dry cleaners interested in exploring AI, Khun recommends starting small and focusing on immediate pain points. As AI tools become more accessible and more powerful, dry cleaners who embrace these technologies could find significant advantages in efficiency, customer service and company management.
